National Waterways : Modi Govt. is working to develop inland waterways as an alternative mode of transport in the country

The Government of India is working to develop inland waterways as an alternative mode of transport in the country, which is cleaner and cheaper than both road and rail transport. There are 111 officially notified Inland National Waterways (NWs) in India identified for the purposes of inland water transport, as per The National Waterways Act, 2016. Out of the 111 NWs, 106 were created in 2016. The NW network covers around 20,275.5 km.

🗾 National Waterway 1 :
1620 Kms (Declared in 1986)

â™» Haldia (Sagar)-Farakka) – 560 Km
â™» Farakka-Patna – 460 Km
â™» Patna-Allahabad – 600 Km

🔱 10 Terminals : Talcher, Jenapur , Dhamra, Paradip, Balasore, Nasirabad, Geonkhali, & Varanasi, Sahibganj, Haldia and Farakka (Navigation Look)

(Note – NW 1 is further getting developed with budget of 5,369 crore under JMVP (Jal Marg Vikas Pariyojana)

891 Kms (Declared in 1988)

â™» Guwahati-Dibrugarh – 508 Km
â™» Dibrugarh-Sadiya – 123 Km

🔱 11 Terminals : Dhubri, Jogighopa, Pandu (Fixed terminals), Tejpur, Silghat, Neamati, Dibrugarh, Sengajan, Panbari, Sadiya, Saikhowa

(Note – NW 2 Cargo Services have been started on 29-Dec-2017)

205 Kms (Declared in 1993)

â™» West coast canal (Kottapuram – Kollam) – 168 Km
â™» Udyogmandal canal (Kochi Pathalam bridge) – 23 Km
â™» Champakara canal (Kochi – Ambalamugal) – 14 Km

🔱 9 Terminals-Kottapuram, Aluva, Maradu,Vaikkom, Thannermukkom, Kayamkulam, Kollam (under construction), Alappuzha, Willingdon Island

1095 Km (Declared in 2008)

🔱 15 Terminals-Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Kottapatnam, Maipadu, Durgarajupatnam, Muktiyala, Ennore(South), Muthukadu, Marakanam, Puducherry, Bhadrachalam, Wazirabad, Vijayawada, Tadepaligudam

623 km.(Declared in 2008)

â™» Matai River (Charbatia-Dhamra) – 40 Km

â™» Mahanadi Delta ( River Mangalgadi-Paradeep) – 101 Km

Out of 111 National Waterways declared by the Government through the National Waterways Act, 2016, National Waterway-1 (Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system from Allahabad to Haldia), National Waterway-2 (River Brahmaputra from Dhubri to Sadiya) & National Waterway-3 (West Coast Canal from Kottapuram to Kollam along with Udyogmandal and Champakara Canals) are already operational. Development for NW-4 & NW-5 have been started. Developmental activities have been initiated on 8 New & most viable NWs in 2017-18 as well.
